Alfie M and Coby from Rec KW were totally engrossed in their Ice-Cream shop project. They worked with excellent cooperation and negotiation skills to first build the shop. They then decided that they needed a sign to tell people what kind of shop it was and a price list so people knew how much to pay. They took turns to write on their sign and helped each other to sound out the words that they needed. They started by holding the paper and then decided that it might be easier to use some pegs to keep it still. Another decision was made about how to attach it to their shop. They thought sellotape might be a good idea but when they tried it out, they realised that it didn’t work too well. They then decided to use the pegs again. An excellent example of independent writing for a purpose and super problem solving skills. Well done boys!
‘Pair’ ice-cream sounds unusual but delicious!
The work that the children in Rec KW completed today was ‘Out of this World.’ They used their superb blending skills to read and follow the instructions to make their own flying saucer. They thought carefully about what a flying saucer might have on it and who might be flying it. Some of them decided it would be aliens but some decided that it would be astronauts. Tomorrow we will be writing a recount of how we made them.
This week in Reception KW we have been halving amounts by sharing them in to two equal groups. Miss Waugh challenged us to halve an odd amounts of toys and the children gave some interesting answers about what to do when they found out that one of them would have more than the other. They all agreed that it wasn’t fair and some of the suggestions were that they put one toy back, get another toy or that each person could have the toy for a given amount of time. Some children suggested cutting the ‘spare’ toy in half but then realised that this would break the toy!
Play underpins the Early Years Foundation stage. It also underpins learning and all aspects of children’s development. Through play, children develop language skills, their emotions and creativity, social and intellectual skills. Our Reception children have had a great time playing and learning outdoors this week. They have been extremely busy:
*Making and playing in ‘Kelly’s Restaurant’. Taking orders and making food.
*Making and completing their own obstacle course, then timing and recording how long it took everyone.
*Bouncing, throwing and jumping with balls.
*Practising walking on the stilts and using the ‘ankle skip’ and never giving up even when they found it hard.
*Making and then playing in their own ball pool.
*Making and acting out play in an ice cream shop.
*Taking turns to throw balls at targets and then adding up their scores.
*Using the paintbrushes and water to mark make.
*Drawing the staff and labelling them.
*Enjoying racing against our friends.
