Within our Reception curriculum we motivate, encourage and support pupils to be inspired by professionals from different places of work and environments so that our pupils are exposed to the world of employment. We ensure that all pupils aspire to become confident, ambitious and optimistic about their prospects. We also explore the skills and interests needed to do different jobs and enable children to see that any person can do any job as long as they have the right skills, talents and interests.
During the Autumn Term the children have been finding out about Scientists and what their job entails. We learned the word prediction and talked about what it meant and also how to conduct an experiment. As part of our pirate topic we helped Granny Pirate from the story we have been reading to determine which type of bag would keep her treasure dry if it were to fall in the sea. The children made their own predictions, tested them out and then discussed the results, explaining why they thought some materials were waterproof and some were not.
In the Summer Term we thought about all of the different jobs that the children might have when they are older. We discussed what they would have to do in these jobs and then the children decided which one they would like to do when they grow up.
Newcastle University delivered STEM workshops to KS2
The focus was ‘Young Scientists’. The children drew what they thought a scientist looked like; studied classification charts; conducted a sound experiment with cups and a slinky to project volume through denser objects; looked at chromatography on filter paper; binary numbers; and finished with a bit of hypnotising and psychology.
It was a lot of fun but most importantly, it inspired our children to think about their future career aspirations. A poll was taken of children who had considered going to university at the beginning and end of the lesson. After the workshops, the number of children who had been inspired, dramatically increased from an average of 4 children per class to an average of 23 children per class!

Sleep Support:
We are often told by parents that their child experiences difficulty sleeping. We know that poor sleep has a direct impact on behaviour, ability to concentrate, academic achievement and general wellbeing. This is also an issue for some of our parents and carers. At any given time up to 40% of adults and 50% of children (this rises to 80% with a SEND diagnosis) have difficulties with their sleep. Yet in a recent survey, almost 60% of adults felt there was a lack of support for sleep issues.
The National Sleep Helpline is run by a team of specialist trained sleep advisors. Although they cannot give medical advice, they can talk through your issues, offer you some practical strategies and recommend services that could help.

We are working with South Tyneside Council to deliver the Holidays and Activities Fund Programme and to bring you the Summer Holiday Club. Free places are available for children and young people aged between 5-16 (parents must stay with the children under the age of 8) who are eligible for benefit-related free school meals or from a family experiencing financial hardship. A place must be booked prior to attending. The activities we are delivering will be at Chuter Ede Community Association, Galsworthy Road, South Shields and are from 25th July – 19th August. All sessions are 10.00 – 3.00 pm, a free packed lunch will be provided. Activities offered are various sports, arts & crafts and board games. You must book a place before attending, please don’t show up without booking!
