We are delighted to extend a warm welcome to all of our Year 1/2 children as we embark on an exciting new academic year filled with learning, growth, and fun adventures!

PE – Monday & Thursday

Children are to come to school dressed in their PE kit.

Reading

Children are read with at least twice a week, at school, therefore it is extremely important children bring their reading books into school every day.

Reading together at home is one of the easiest but most important ways in which you can help your child. Children are given one new book a week. They should read this book multiple times at home, with an adult, to ensure that they develop their fluency and comprehension skills.

Maths Week England 2024! 

This week we participated in Maths Week England. The purpose of Maths Week sets out to raise the profile of the subject, at the same time, encouraging children to pursue maths by promoting a more positive and inclusive approach. Every morning, we listened to daily maths stories as well as taking part in a number of problem solving and Teach Active activities. Some activities required a lot of resilience and patient but we solved them in the end! We LOVE maths in Y1/2!

St Oswald’s Church Visit

In our RE topic we have been learning all about the religion ‘Christianity’. As part of our topic we have been learning about the different features of a church and the special objects you find in churches. We were lucky enough to visit one of our local churches and have a look at the special objects inside. The priest was very helpful and he answered lots of our questions about what Christians believe!

Class News 23-24

British Science Week!

This year’s theme for British Science Week was ‘time’. We took part in a comparative and fair test enquiry to find out which biscuit was the best dunker! We measured the amount of time it took for 4 different types of biscuits to break when immersed in water. Most of us predicted the bourbon would be the best dunker because it had more layers but we found the malted milk was actually the best dunker.

Geography Fieldwork 

As part of our geography topic we completed some fieldwork in our local area. First, we used Google Earth to decide on 3 sites to visit (field, shops and Raeburn Avenue). When we visited the sites, we sketched the sites and we discussed what we could see. We then came back to the classroom and discussed the similarities and differences between Whiteleas and a village in Kenya. We were super excited to be able to visit our local area and tell Miss Hodgkinson where our friends and family live! 



Autumn Design and Technology

This half term we have been practising our sewing skills in Year1/2. We used a running stitch to join our pouch together. We then designed the front of the pouch and created the design using different coloured felt. During the evaluation process we evaluated our finished product against a set of criteria- purpose, appearance, durability and running stitch and then rated our product out of 5. Most of us scored 5!

Maths – Number bonds to 10!  

We have been learning and practising our number bonds to ten this half term. Our challenge was to arrange small triangles to make one big triangle, so the numbers that touch add up to 10. We accepted the challenge and put our knowledge to the test! It was very tricky but when we started working systematically it made it a little bit easier. Some of us even found more than 1 way!

Outdoor Classroom Day – 9th November

As part of outdoor classroom day we took our science lesson outdoors! We went into the local area and investigated how many animals could be found which were herbivores, omnivores and carnivores. We drew the animals we observed in Whiteleas and then, when we got back to school, researched what they eat. Finally we used a Venn diagram to classify the animals.

West Boldon Lodge – 7th November

Year 1/2 had a fantastic day at West Boldon Lodge! We collected materials from the forest to build our own houses and recreated the Great Fire of London on Pudding Lane! We were shocked at how quick and easy the fire spread when the houses were so close together. We also made bread and cooked it on an open fire, just like Thomas Farriner did in 1666! Alesha said “Making bread was fun and it was SO yummy!”

Science Buddies – 16th October

Today, we had a visit from Katie and her friend Einstein, a giant African snail!

We used our scientific enquiry skills to complete a number of scientific experiments linked to our current topic ‘Animals including Humans’. We used our senses and made our own bath bomb and, observed what happens to germs when we use soap. One child said “This is the best day ever!” while another said “I’m going to show my mam how to do this at home!”
