Dear Reception and Year 1 Parents/Carers.
Thank you for all that attended the Phonics meeting. It was also lovely to see so many of you attend.
Look out for upcoming dates in Autumn and Spring for our classroom-based phonics sessions and throughout the year for our KS1 story time sessions.

Year 2 Story Time sessions with parents – autumn term:
Parents from Year 2 attended our reading sessions. We talked about our Reading for Pleasure agenda and why it it so important to foster a love for reading. Mrs Simpson and Miss Hodgkinson read out stories to the group, demonstrating how to talk about the text. Parents then had the opportunity to read stories with their children from our library. The sessions were finished with a story together and children received craft packs to continue book talk around our shared stories at home.
Pupil voice: ‘Reading with my mam was so much fun. It was nice to see her at school. I got to choose a good book and read it to her.’
Parent voice: ‘I liked having the time to just read with my child today. At home it can be tricky with reading but I’m going to try to ask questions about the pictures like you did.’
Year 1 Story Time sessions with parents – spring term:
Parent voice: ‘I found the sessions very beneficial. It was lovely to see the children so focused and interacting with the stories that Mrs Simpson was reading. My child is so happy in school and loves reading.’
Parent voice: ‘I enjoyed seeing my child in their classroom environment. It was good to have time to read outside of the pressure of normal life tasks.’
Parent voice: ‘The sessions have been very beneficial for my children. It has encouraged my child – and his brothers – to get the book box out of the cupboard at home! They are now reading every night.’
Parent voice: ‘After watching the sessions, I am reading with my child a lot more at home. It has helped us to bond and I am proud that I am helping towards giving them a better future.’
Phonics parent workshops:
Parents from EYFS and KS1 have been invited into their children’s class to observe phonics being taught. They were able to see correct pronunciation and how to support their child with segmenting and blending whilst reading and writing.
Parents reported being surprised at how much their children knew and how well they were progressing.
Parent Voice:
‘I found the session so beneficial. I didn’t realise he was doing so well. I’m so happy with his confidence in class and the teacher’s way of delivering it was so helpful.’
‘I found it a good session to help me when I am with my child at home.’
‘I now understand how to correctly say the sound when sounding out at home. I will find it easier reading with my child now.’
