Miss K Waugh – Class Teacher

Miss J Prior – Teaching Assistant

PE – Wednesday & Thursday

Children are to come to school dressed in their PE kit. Please ensure that they are dressed in the correct clothing as stated in the school uniform policy.

Reading

Children are read with at least twice a week in school. It is therefore extremely important that children bring their reading books into school every day.

Reading together at home is one of the easiest but most important ways in which you can help your child. Children are given one new book a week. They should read this book multiple times at home, with an adult, to ensure that they develop their fluency and comprehension skills.

Class News 2023-2024

Road Safety Day

The children have enjoyed participating in some road safety activities today, demonstrating how to keep safe when near a road and when crossing it. Some of the children even had the opportunity to take on the role of our lolly pop man/woman.

School Council Elections

Today the children were excited to vote for their school council representative. Children read out their speeches to convince the other children in their class to vote for them and then the children wrote their winning candidate onto a piece of paper. We took these to our ‘voting station’ where children posted their votes into the election boxes.

Science Buddies Workshop

As part of our science topic, the children took part in a science workshop where we looked at grouping creatures according to their characteristics. We also experimented by measuring the ingredients to make our own bath bombs.

Author – Toby Glover visit

We were very excited today to visit our school library where we met the author Toby Glover. Toby talked to us about his books and showed us the illustrations in some of them. Toby then read one of his stories to us which we all enjoyed.

Soft Play

As a reward for all of our hard work this half term we were able to decide on a special activity we could take part in for one afternoon. We came up with many good and exciting ideas which we then voted for to make sure this was fair. The winning activity was to enjoy the soft play in our hall which we all enjoyed.

West Boldon Lodge

To support our learning in History of the Great Fire of London, we visited West Boldon Lodge where we took part in some activities to help our understanding of what life was like in 1666. We made made bread (like in the bakers on Pudding Lane) and we measured the ingredients, kneaded the dough and sat around the campfire to cook the bread. After we built houses using straws and tissue paper and positioned these in a row, close together, before starting a fire in one of them and watching how quickly the houses burnt down.

Remembrance Day

To celebrate both Remembrance Day and Outdoor Classroom Day the children painted a picture of a poppy outside using mud paint. We looked at why we wear a poppy on Remembrance Day and we participated in a 2-minute silence to remember the soldiers who have died.

Tennis Tournament

After our coaching lessons with the tennis coach, Year 1 had the opportunity to attend a tennis tournament where we took part in different tennis activities. We were able to use the skills we learnt from the coaching sessions and apply them in the tournament.

Christmas party

The children have enjoyed celebrating the end of term with a Christmas Party. There was a lot of dancing, singing and party games. The children enjoyed games of pass the parcel, musical statues and corners. The children then enjoyed their party food on their mats they decorated themselves.

Christmas treat – Polar Express and Hot chocolate

For our last day before Christmas the children chose their treat to be a Christmas movie and snacks. The children enjoyed the movie with a hot chocolate, popcorn and cookies whilst watching the Polar Express. We also had a surprise visit from Santa who spoke to the children and gave presents out to everyone.
