2023 – 2024- Spring Term 

Year 5- Miners Visit 

To enhance their learning in our local history unit, “What jobs have people had in the North East?” year 5 were visited by a group of miners who spoke to the children about their experiences and brought along some of their personal possessions for the children to explore and discuss. Before the visit, the children had prepared some questions and wrote notes throughout the session. A great introduction to oral history!

History in Reception

WASH DAY IN RECEPTION

When the children came into the classroom, there were lots of strange objects on the table. Before we had even done the register they were talking excitedly about what they might be. During the morning the children worked with Miss Wilson to try and find out what they might be used for. We had lots of interesting answers from bats, to tennis rackets, food tongs and  sock warmers. The children certainly didn’t like the smell of the carbolic soap.

Later on in the day we read ‘Mrs Mopple’s Washing line’ and ‘Peepo’ and found out what the items were used for. We talked about the difference between washday now and washday in the past and the children had a go at using the items to wash Miss Waugh’s socks! Lots of fun was had but all of the children agreed it was very hard work!

To celebrate the end of our Castle topic in Reception we held our very own medieval banquet. During the morning we prepared and made some food that the Kings and Queens would have eaten. We chopped vegetables to make vegetable soup and weighed our ingredients to make gingerbread. The children were announced as they entered the banquet and bowed/curtsied to our chosen King and Queen (King Aidan and Queen Erin) They also took part in group dancing, partner dancing and playing games.

2023 – 2024- Autumn Term 

UKS2 had the opportunity to revisit their prior learning (Egyptians and Romans) as they explored the galleries at the Hancock museum and participated in some fact finding activities.

How can we recreate the wonder of Ancient Egypt?

3JL had a fantastic time learning all about Ancient Egypt! We learned about the epic timeline Ancient Egyptians lived within and how they lived, worked and worshipped. We learned about the huge importance of the River Nile and all about mummification and the pyramids. After visiting the Hancock museum, we cemented our cultural learning about the marvellous Ancient Egyptians!

KS1 have studied The Fire of London this half term. They have also looked at the more local “Fire of Gateshead” within this unit. The children have had the opportunity to explore a Box of Delight and visit West Boldon Lodge to support and enhance their learning.

2022- 2023 – Trips, trips, trips, enrichment, enrichment, enrichment. 

Children all across school have developed their understanding of their history units this term through excellent enrichment activities. 

KS1 explored the Box of Delight to handle old toys and even played a few games themselves.

LKS2 learnt a lot during their trip to the local Roman site of Segedunum. They also enjoyed being archeologists themselves whilst handling Stone age artefacts.

UKS2 are Anglo- Saxon experts after visiting the Laing art gallery to view the Lindisfarne Gospels. They also visited the significant local history site of Jarrow Hall where they learnt about Anglo Saxon farming, Bede (the local celeb) and the tale of Beowulf.
